The university preserves several old herbariums including the alguier (algae herbarium) by Jean Vincent Félix Lamouroux, professor of natural history at the University of Caen from 1809 to 1825. Author of a classification of algae still used today on the five continents, Lamouroux is one of the first and undoubtedly the greatest specialist of algae of his time.
During this round table, we will present the personality and the work of this great scientist in particular through what remains of the correspondence that Lamouroux maintained with many scholars and which is now scattered in about twenty archival repositories, in France and abroad. We will also present the alguier made up of local, European collections but also samples brought back from the great expeditions of the early nineteenth century which was used to develop its classification, which today constitutes one of the great heritage objects of the university.
